Kitchen Taka
A moment to unwind in the city.
At counter-only yoshoku eatery Kitchen Taka in Shinjuku's Araki-cho, browned hamburg steaks, thin-omelette omurice, and sauteed beef with tomato take centre stage for quiet solo dining.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Juices emerge the moment a pair of chopsticks cuts into the hamburg steak, one of the signature plates to seek out at Kitchen Taka. Seared in a skillet until browned and fragrant on the outside while staying airy and tender within, the patty is brought together by a rich demi-glace. Breaking the yolk of the accompanying fried egg and folding it into the sauce lends a mellow richness that keeps chopsticks moving toward the rice. Simple accompaniments like potato salad, shredded cabbage, and a mild cup of miso soup round out the reassuring familiarity of classic Western-influenced Japanese diner fare.
Sharing top billing with the hamburg steak is the "beef with tomato." Slices of beef belly and onions are sautéed together with diced tomatoes and a house sauce; the sweetness of beef fat blends smoothly with the bright acidity of the tomato, yielding a generous sauce that begs to be spooned over cabbage and rice. The menu also covers yoshoku essentials made on the stovetop, including old-school omurice wrapped neatly in a thin egg sheet, ginger-laced pork, and shrimp-studded pilaf.
Tucked along an alley in Araki-cho, Shinjuku Ward, the shop is a minimalist, counter-only space. With hand disinfection and quiet dining encouraged, conversation stays minimal, letting guests focus on the sizzle of the pans and the freshly prepared food. Kitchen Taka accepts no reservations and takes cash only, offering an understated perch for anyone stopping in alone to enjoy careful, unhurried kitchen work.
